This definition for total disability, allows the disabled person (disabled from doing the material and substantial duties of their occupation) to work in another and still be allowed to collect the full tax free benefit amount (tax free...assuming the premium was paid for with after tax dollars).
A sub-specialty definition for total disability for medical professionals, may also be available, which will then allow the claimant to “still” work in the medical field, but in another specialty!
These definitions can be especially important, if the claimant was underinsured at the time of claim and needs the additional income, or if the premium was paid for by the employer (or by the insured, with pre-tax dollars) and as a result the benefits will then be taxable!
There are other definitions (6) which are part of a contract and these may not be as liberal as the aforementioned and based on one’s occupation.

When is the best time to get disability income protection insurance? The best time to get this valuable form of protection, is at the earliest possible time it is both affordable and feasible. The earlier age, makes it least expensive with a longer payout based on a benefit period of age 65. Another big reason to get this protection at the earliest possible time. is due the application process which looks at your possible health issues and other factors. The longer one waits, the more expensive it becomes along with a chance of you being declined, due to a heart attack etc. Note: There are brokerages such as mine, who specialize in disability insurance and who knows where to go for the otherwise “uninsurable”.
